Potatoes and the Book of Mormon: Secret Twins?!

I´m gonna let you all know from the get go that winter here in Paraná is COLD fuuuuaaaa! And it is raining so it makes it worse....but luckily as a missionary I have an internal fire of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ that keeps me warm during these cold days

Anyways, BOM DIA. como vai você? I had to throw a little Portugués in their to mix it up for yall haha. This week was pretty dang good, lots of work and success as well. We managed to find 5 new people to teach, and that is one of my favorite parts as a missionary, finally being able to sit down and testify and teach of the truth. We ran into Nico while waiting for a bus, and when we went by his house that evening, we met his dad and uncle and they had a rabbit hole of questions and doubts that were great to respond to, which made them more interested to learn from us. They have had bad experiences with other churches, so we are trying to help them gain confidence in coming to church and feeling the difference the Spirit makes.

We also contacted Jorge and Nélida, and they are really cool. They cooked us an ASADO FINALLLYYYYY and we taught them about the Plan of Salvation. Nélida becasue of her diet is already living the word of wisdom, and she also has a lot of interest in our family history center, which lets her create her family tree free! A lot of people down here have European ancestry (Jorge has last name from Denmark) and I have been trying to teach and find using family history, so I am glad we can help them with their family tree while also teaching them about the restored gospel and eternal families!

I also contacted Araceli, who I helped get married and baptized in my last area, and she has 3 little brothers who live in my area in 5 Esquinas that have been going to church with her and have an interest in learning about the gospel! Carlos, Dylan, and Matias...I met them at the weding and they are fun kids, so I am trying to get in contact with them to meet them and talk with their dad about teaching them (and him). I really I hope I can help Araceli and her family all come unto Christ!

This week we had Zone Conference, and we learned what the Book of Mormon and a Potato have in common. They both nourish, come from the ground, planted in faith, harvested to be enjoyed by millions, and are low in fat (the last one is a joke haha). We actually received a potato, check the pic below. If you havent looked up the history of the Dutch potato project, I encourage you to do. The dutch latter-day saints had to give their potatoes to the german latter-day saints who were starving after WWII. It was tough for them to do so, since the germans were their enemies not too long before. But doing so help the germans avoid starvation, as well as nourish the faith of all involved. Sometimes we are given tasks or comandments that are hard to follow, or difficult to keep. Imagine Peter when Christ told him that he would deny him 3 times before the rooster crowed. Peter ferevntly denied he would do such a thing, but his negation made it posible for the atonement to occur and for the Church to be established. A tough comandment to follow, but doing so made his faith grow stronger, allowing him to be "the rock" Christ told him to become. At times we will be tried and tested, but if we can stay true to our covenants, no matter how dificult they may be to keep, we will be blessed with more faith, love, and eternal knowledge from our Heavenly Father.

I have my own Rotisería? Manda-limas? Cofreboxes? A very confusing week haha

Hooollliiisss!!!

This week has been very...intersting to say the least. We managed to find two new families to teach from a week full of classic contacting, which was fun becuase I have met some interesting people and seen some intersting things. We contacted this house and the mom came out to tell us that she is happily catholic and doesn´t want to change, but was willing to listen to our message at her doorstep with her arms folded very proud like. I felt the spirit confirm what I was testifying was true, and even though she has no interest in us, it was fun to see he face change as we testified the truth and her feeling it as well. I passed by a rotisería, which is like a cooked foods palce that makes asado, meals, etc with meat and all that, and it was called Rostisería Ian! I asked if that meant I can get a discount, but they happily told me no... haha.

A member had us over the other day to have a mandarin, which looked nice and orange and ripe to eat. As they invited me to eat it, I noticed some snickers on their faces, but I paid no mind...I quikly realized what was so funny, as the mandarin I was eating tasted like a very sour lemon! Qué ásco! They told me thier mandarin tree had cross-pollinated with a chinese breed of lemon, making it look normal but taste sour. I wasn´t even mad I was truly suprised that something like that can happen.

So there is this soda called Pritty Limón, and it is the Argentine version of Mountain Dew. And everyone down here loves the Simpsons, so this company, with it delicioulsy yellow beverage uses the Simpsons images as its brand. They have special deals where if you bring in three soda caps and some pesos, you can get a tupperware box called a cofrebox...every kiosco has the sign for this offer, but I never beleive that they have the cofreboxes. So this week I saved up some caps and turned them in and low and behold they have the cofrebox! I got one with Homero Simpson, and there are 5 more to collect. My Pokemon addiction is kicking back up again haha.

Overall this past week I have learned to be more humble, patient, and honest. There was some tough times this week, when plans feel through, when people didn´t come to church, when I wasn´t feeling emotionally good, that it made everything tough to handle. But it has been something I learned from. As I was talking to a family in the ward, I started to cry becasue I was telling them why I want to work hard, and to help strengthen the ward, and the passion that keeps me going despite the constant attacks from Satan. And since this week was tough, I got a little emotional. But they told me that I was doing a good job, and reminded me that the Lord thinks so too. We aren´t perfect, and that´s ok, because if we truly give it our all, the Lord will bless us and strengthen us, our families, todo. I´m excited to keep trying my hardest to improve this ward and help these wonderful people here in Paraná come closer to Christ. I have some plans in the making so keep an eye out for some cool stuff later this month...

7 Months! And the miracle of Sol (the person and the sun haha)

MIS QUERIIIDDDDOOOOSSSS

This week was one for the books! Elder Vallejo and I did a lot of old fashioned missionary work...which meant lots of contacting. Mornings here are hard to work because most people are cooking and don´t want to be bothered, but we managed to find people and at the least practice my castellano a little bit more. It is starting to get cold here since winter is a few weeks away and there has been some pretty frigid days due to the humidity of the river and the cloudy and rainy days, but I have been staying warm eating empanadas. I know how to make them so if people want to due a FHE activity with me when I get back home making empanadas and other Argentine food, I would be honored haha

The highlight of the week was Sol. Not only was it nice to see the sol (sun) peek its way through the clouds to warm us up today, but we also met a wonderful woman named Sol. She was a reference from a member (Hermano Reyes) in my last area on the other side of town. The member is an American who served his mission in here 20 years ago but came back and got married and started his family as well. He still speaks English by the way, so it is great to talk to him about his crazy mission stories. Anyways, he had us over at his house to teach his friend from the college, named Sol. They share a typography class and he has been helping her through some tough times but letting her study at his house and being spiritual to her. We took a cole (bus) over there and tought about the Restoration, how God and Jesus Christ restored precious truths that were lost during thousands of years of apostacy through the prophet Joseph Smith. It was the best lesson that I have ever had in my mission! She expressed her desires to have the same spirit we do, to have that confirmation of the veracity of the Book of Mormon...never have I met anyone like this, other than myself when I was taking the lessons. She accepted an invitation to follow the savior and be baptized later this month, it was amazing! Hermano Reyes was telling me how she was ready, and he was right!

I have been trying to pray specifically for people while I am here on my mission, as well as setting goals and finding miracles along the way. And time and time again I have had my prayers answered by praying specifically, and I invite you all to do the same, especially if you are going through trials or need some form of confirmation in life. Getting on your knees and pouring your heart to God will not be in vain, I promise you that. If you take my advice this week, email me how the Lord blessed you or helped you, I want to know!

Love you all! Send me letters or packages pleasssseeeee (google missionary packages argentina for more info on care packages)
